New Year's Eve in Mazatlán 2026: Fireworks, Holiday Dinners and Where to Stay

New Year's Eve in Mazatlán centers on the malecón, the city's seaside boulevard. To ring in 2026, the city hosted a free party on Avenida del Mar with a live concert, fireworks and a drone show, and national media reported more than 40,000 people in attendance. If you're bringing family for Christmas and New Year's, book an oceanfront condo early: dates from December 24 to January 2 are among the first to sell out.
Below, our team in Mazatlán explains what December 31 is actually like, how to handle holiday dinners, what to do between Christmas and Three Kings Day, and which buildings work best for your group. New to the city? Start with our Mazatlán guide.
What New Year's Eve in Mazatlán is really like
The free party on the malecón
The official celebration to welcome 2026 ran along Avenida del Mar, from around Insurgentes to the big "Mazatlán" letters, one of the busiest parts of the malecón. Regional Mexican singer Roberto Jr. headlined, and the night included fireworks and a drone show. It was free and very family-oriented. Grandparents brought folding chairs, kids carried glow sticks, and groups of friends showed up in the afternoon to grab a spot by the water.
Expect a local crowd and Spanish-language music. Many visitors from the US and Canada tell us that's exactly what they enjoy about it. December 31, 2026 falls on a Thursday. The city usually confirms the location, performers and schedule sometime in December, so check the City of Mazatlán's official channels before you lock in plans.
Practical tips for the night
- Get there early. With tens of thousands of people out, the best spots near the stage with a clear view of the fireworks fill up hours ahead.
- Walk, don't drive. Expect road closures and heavy traffic on Avenida del Mar. If you're staying nearby, leave the car in your building's parking and walk.
- Pick a meeting spot. Cell service can get spotty in big crowds. With kids, this matters.
- Bring a light jacket. December nights by the ocean feel cool, especially with the breeze.
- Keep valuables to a minimum. Visitors in past years have noted a heavy police presence. Still, use the same common sense you would at any big event.
Midnight traditions worth joining
Many families have dinner at their rental and head to the malecón just before midnight. Others watch the fireworks first and then toast back at the condo. Do as the locals do and eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each chime, making a wish with each. Some people even run around the block with an empty suitcase to bring a year full of travel.
Christmas and New Year's dinners: eat out or cook in?
Eating out
Many Mazatlán restaurants serve special prix-fixe dinners on December 24 and 31 with limited seating. If you want an ocean view or a table in the historic center, reserve weeks ahead, by phone or through platforms like OpenTable. On January 1 some restaurants open on holiday hours and others close, so check before heading out.
Cooking at your condo
For many families, this is the biggest perk of renting an apartment. You can cook your own holiday dinner, eat on your own schedule, and nobody has to drive home afterward.
- Shop early. Supermarkets in the Golden Zone get packed on December 23, 24, 30 and 31 and may run reduced hours. Stock up a day or two ahead.
- Buy fresh seafood. Pino Suárez Market in the historic center is the classic place for shrimp, fish and tropical fruit. Aguachile or grilled pescado zarandeado gives your dinner a Sinaloa twist.
- Ask for a grill. Some of our units have an outdoor grill. If carne asada is part of your family's holidays, ask us for one.
Things to do between Christmas and Three Kings Day
The days between holidays are great for exploring at an easy pace:
- Historic center. Plazuela Machado, the Ángela Peralta Theater and the Cathedral look beautiful at night, and many families attend Christmas Eve Mass at the Cathedral.
- Cliff divers on the malecón. A Mazatlán classic that kids love.
- Sunsets at Olas Altas. December usually brings clear skies and long, colorful sunsets.
- Whale season. Winter is humpback whale season along the Pacific coast. Check dates and departures directly with tour operators.
- Live music. From November through April, many bars and restaurants have live music every night, often with no cover charge.
- A beach day on January 1. Sun, seafood and long beach walks are a very local way to start the year. The water is cooler than in summer, so a heated pool comes in handy.
- Rosca de Reyes on January 6. If you stay for Three Kings Day, grab the traditional sweet bread from a local bakery.

When to book for Christmas and New Year's Eve in Mazatlán
The earlier you book, the better your options. In December 2025, local media reported hotels fully booked for Christmas. Every year we see the same pattern: 6-guest ocean-view condos and anything close to the malecón go first.
Our advice:
- Book now if your dates between December 24 and January 2 are fixed.
- If your dates are flexible, message us on WhatsApp. Moving your arrival or departure by a day can open up more options.
- Plan an easy departure. Many families stay through January 2 or 3 so they don't have to travel the morning after the party.
Condo vs. hotel for the holidays
A hotel can be fine for the holidays, but for families and groups the difference adds up quickly:
| 24K condo | Hotel room | |
|---|---|---|
| Space | 2–3 bedrooms, living and dining room | One room, so groups need several |
| Holiday dinners | Cook your own in a full kitchen | Hotel or restaurant menu at set times |
| Time together | Everyone shares one living room and balcony | Split across separate rooms |
| Cost | Shared by the whole group | Paid per room |
| Parking | Free at our buildings | Varies by hotel |
| Service | Local team on WhatsApp | 24-hour front desk, sometimes dinner packages |
For a couple who wants everything handled, a hotel package can make sense. For families of 4 to 8, a condo gives you more space and privacy, and you get to celebrate your own way.
Where to stay for New Year's Eve in Mazatlán
We manage 32 apartments in Mazatlán. These are the buildings we recommend most for the holidays:
Torre Catania: walk to the party
Catania is on Avenida del Mar, the same malecón avenue where the 2025 celebration took place. We have 7 units here, each with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, sleeping 4 to 6 guests. The building has a pool, gym, elevator, balconies and free parking, and some units also have a laptop-friendly workspace.
Best for: families and groups who want to walk to the malecón on New Year's Eve and back without hunting for a cab. For 6 guests, see this ocean-view condo in Torre Catania. If watching the fireworks from your balcony matters to you, ask us which units face the right direction.
Camino Al Mar: beach access and a heated pool in the Golden Zone
Camino Al Mar is in the Golden Zone (Zona Dorada), on Avenida Camarón Sábalo / Avenida Gaviotas. It sits right on the beach with direct access to the sand. Units sleep 4 to 6 guests and come with a heated pool, gym, elevator, balcony and free parking. Some are on high floors, like the 10th and 23rd.
Best for: families with kids who want to walk straight onto the beach and still have a heated pool when winter water feels cool. If you're 6 and want a bedroom for each couple, the 9th-floor unit with 3 bedrooms and 3 king beds is one of our most requested for the holidays.
Esmeralda: a quieter base in Sábalo Cerritos
Esmeralda is on Avenida Sábalo Cerritos, a calmer area north of the Golden Zone. Its 4 units each sleep 6, with 2 or 3 bedrooms, a pool, elevator, balcony and free parking. They're a block from the beach, and some have an outdoor grill.
Best for: families who want to rest, cook a big holiday dinner, and go to the malecón only on the 31st, by taxi or car (allow for traffic). The 3-bedroom, 3-bath penthouse with panoramic views is a great fit for a multigenerational Christmas.
Bigger groups: Isla Diamante
For up to 8 guests, our condo at Isla Diamante on Avenida del Mar has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a pool and a gym, so the whole group can stay together instead of renting two places.
